Building a Winter Car Emergency Kit
A breakdown or a slide into a snowy ditch is stressful on any day. In winter it can also be dangerous, so it pays to keep a few essentials in the car all season.
The basics
- Ice scraper and snow brush.
- Jumper cables or a portable jump starter.
- Flashlight with spare batteries.
- First aid kit and any medicines you need.
- Phone charger or power bank.
Stay warm
Pack a warm blanket, hats, gloves and an extra pair of dry socks for everyone who usually rides with you. Add some water and high-energy snacks.
Get unstuck
A small shovel, a bag of sand or cat litter for traction, and a tire inflator can turn a long wait into a short delay.
Check the car itself
Cold weather lowers tire pressure, so check it often. Keep the gas tank at least half full, and make sure your wipers and washer fluid are rated for winter.
If you get stranded
Stay with your car, turn on your hazard lights and call for help. Run the engine only about 10 minutes each hour for heat, and keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow to prevent carbon monoxide from building up inside.
